"TACOBAR" ANOTHER HIGH PRICED TAQUERIA?
I was hanging out in the Fillmore district the other day when it began to rain leading me to think it was a good time to duck inside somewhere and eat. I saw this relatively new place called
Tacobar and thought why not, it wasn't really crowded and could be a good cheap eat. When I walked in it wasn't the menu that first caught my attention it was the wall and door of the bathroom. Interesting.
After perusing the menu I saw that it wasn't exactly a cheap taqueria it's what I'd call a taqueria upgrade where they say they use farm fresh and organic what not ingredients thus things are $1 to $2 more than they probably should be, but I order something anyway.
I went with a Veracruz Pescado Burro--grilled mahi mahi with cabbage slaw and salsa veracruz--a tomato based salsa--on a whole wheat tortilla. It was $8.75 but then I had to pay .75 cents more to get cheese so with tax it came to $10--for a burrito. From my standpoint all burritos should come with cheese--no exceptions--I shouldn't have to pay more for it.
As you can see there is an awful lot of cabbage and I would say I wish there was more fish but the mahi mahi was only okay and tasted (and smelled) slightly fishy, which I thought meant it wasn't quite fresh but I could be wrong. Anyway my first bite was just kind of blah, there wasn't much flavor to it. I ended up adding the green salsa to it and it helped A LOT to spice it up and give some kind of tangy taste to it. Otherwise it was just meh--I'd rather have gone to
Chipotle--but at least I got some fiber with the cabbage and whole wheat--though not a whole lot else. I won't be bellying up to this bar again.
