4505 MEATS...A QUICK BREAKFAST BITE
Saturday morning at San Francisco's
Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is one of the few places where both locals and tourists make a point of getting to. Living relatively near the place me and the SO try to get down there whenever we have folks visit or if we can drag ourselves out of bed early enough on a Saturday morning to get down there before the crowds get annoying. One of the places that has a regular spot at the building is
4505 Meats.
They are part of that whole local, sustainable, organic food movement that sprouted up several years ago and have managed to fashion themselves as
the meat purveyor of the area. You can even sign up to take butchery classes with them, which I think is a good idea for people. If you are going to eat meat you should really know the how, why and process of killing and cutting up an animal. It can either give you an appreciation of butchery or it may just turn you into a vegetarian (in all seriousness it just might) so either way you might learn something. On this particular morning I wasn't all that hungry but their descriptions were tempting.
If it's on top it's either their best or they have a lot and need to move some product, either way I just went with it and got the maple bacon breakfast sausage sandwich (like I'm really going to pass up a pork product).
Ground bacon mixed with sausage on a grilled sesame scallion bun with butter (yes! finally!), aged gruyere, a sunny side up egg and fresh
pepper cress. Every sandwich is made to order so it was hot and fresh off the grill. The first bite is full of crunch and flavor. The egg breaks and yolk runs through the sandwich, though the sausage patty is moist and peppery with just a hint of maple sweetness so there is no need to worry about any dryness here, that's a good thing. With a nicely toasted buttery bun it was very tasty and hit the spot first thing in the morning. And yes it's an $8 sandwich but the sauerkraut is free and pretty much all you can eat--and a good compliment to the sandwich, so I'll let this pass and say it was worth it. Next time I'm definitely going to try the "best damn cheeseburger", I mean after all they do specialize in meat.
