As most know, I've been a fan of StrEAT Food Park since inception and try to get there whenever possible. On this particular rare sunny, not too windy Saturday me and the SO made our way over to see what was available. The choices are sometimes a crapshoot depending on day and time of day. This time around we saw a lot of familiar places that we'd tried before and then came across Fuki, a tiny little trailer.
And while the menu is small, only 7 items, they sounded like tasty items that struck a cord with our taste buds in the moment and so we ordered.
We got the Moroccan meatballs and the pork shoulder. The meatballs were a mixture of grass fed beef, turmeric, cinnamon and ginger in a sauce of stewed tomatoes and raisins topped with yogurt sauce. They were very good. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, no flavor overwhelmed the other. It all mixed together to really give you that Middle Eastern flavor throughout the meat and sauce. The balls were also large, tender and hearty---no dryness here. They were a nice surprise. I didn't really taste the raisins, which was actually fine, I like raisins, but don't necessarily need them. Though I can see the other level of flavor sweetness it could add. Either way this dish would be a winner.
The pork was a braised shoulder in a sauce of coconut milk, chipotle, garlic and orange zest. I'm not the biggest fan of coconut, but I did like this dish, the SO really liked it. Again the different seasonings mixed well and didn't muddy it all up, plus the chipotle gave it that little bit of kick to offset the slightly sweet coconut. The pork was tender and juicy--nicely done. You get a choice of quinoa, brown rice or lettuce to put things on. We each got quinoa to be different and I think it worked well with both dishes. As did the sides of shredded carrots and the spinach salad with almonds, cranberries and a light vinaigrette. It was a pretty large and filling serving for $10 and I think we'd both agree it was worth it.
Surprises can sometimes come in small packages and in this instance that is true. Fuki doesn't have a big fancy food truck or outsized menu, what it does have is good food with good flavor and value. If you are out and about and see them (they also do catering it seems) give them a try, I'm pretty sure you'll be glad you did.
