Places I've Eaten

brioche bakery in north beach...it is all about the quiche

I used to work at a start-up, I know, shocking right? It was exactly like you think a start-up would be. A handful of employees sitting around a table in an open office furiously typing away at our laptops and communicating with each other through Slack, even though we were sitting right next to each other! A real experience, and I loved it!

The office was in a walk up space in North Beach they shared with two other start-ups. One of the  fun things was the opportunity to work in a different neighborhood and try out new spots for lunch that I normally would not have gotten to. Just around the corner was a cute little place called Brioche Bakery. They did a number of things like sandwiches, soups, salads and some baked goods, but what always seemed to catch my eye when I went was the quiche.

quiche and salad

They are individual mini quiche that come in either a veggie or one with veggies and bacon. They come with a side salad all for about $9. While they call them mini they are actually quite big and when add in the salad, there is more than enough here to get two lunches out of. It is thick and full of egg, cheese and bacon and comes in a lovely crust that was flaky, crispy and buttery.

As you can see, it is chock-a-block full of all good quiche things. They even heat it up for you in a quick convection oven (not a microwave!) so you get all the hot gooey-ness of cheese and egg. A very tasty and filling spot of lunch. Sure, I probably could have eaten it all in one sitting, but I would have needed a nap afterwards and there was start-upy work to do.

sugar bread

Since they are a bakery, I did try one or two of their baked goods like the sugar bread above and.....

pecan pie

...the mini pecan pie. The bread thing was just okay at $3 a slice. Really, it is just baked white bread with sugar on top. The pie was nice, a bit on the super sweet side and also $5, making it almost as much as the quiche and salad.

I think overall, it is the savory where this place shines, which is what makes it a popular lunch option in the area. They did always seem to be hopping whenever I went in. While I no longer work at the start-up (they got acquired as those things do), if I was in the hood, I'd most definitely make my way to Brioche Bakery again for the quiche since it does hit my sweet spots for food--tasty, hearty and a good value. Add in fresh made daily and it is a winner. How many places can you say that about in SF.

P.S.--No seriously, leave some place name comments, I'm always on the lookout!
