Places I've Eaten

cookie time! dandelion chocolate

I'm back at the Ferry Building on a random Thursday because it is a nice day and I've gotten nothing better to do. They have a mini farmer's market out front today and there are a fair number of people just hanging around, like me! I'm wandering around the outside stalls and I notice the spaces they've added under the eaves outside. One of them is an expanded version of Dandelion Chocolate, them of the start up boys who wanted to make artisan chocolate for the masses using organic chocolate direct from farmers in countries that grow cocoa beans. Or something to that effect, but you can read all about it on their website.

Today I'm more interested in the handful of baked goods I see calling me in their window. Specifically a chocolate chip cookie that from initial impressions, is a big honking circle of chocolatey goodness like this:

I walk up to the window and the little signs says $3. I point at the cookie and ask, "are they all that big?" The girl behind the counter assures me they are and taking her at her word, I say, "then I'll take one." The one in the window is a display and they do hand me one from a container of them in the back.

When I pull it out of the bag, it is quite big and size wise, almost matches those of Cafe Madeleine.  Almost. But that still makes it bigger than most other cookies I've had around town, and we all know I've had plenty. It is also decently thick through the middle and has a pleasing light brown color. I pinch off an edge and it is a little on the crumbly side but does soften a touch as you get toward the middle. Biting into it, it is kind of sugary. The outer layer is also sweet crispy. It is like the sugar or brown sugar in the mix floated to the top while cooking, creating a sugar crust on the outside that, while not tasting bad or anything, isn't my particular fave thing in a cookie.

The inside was a bit better as it was soft and filled with their 70% dark chocolate in abundant pieces.

See all those chocolate pieces, now that is what I like to call maximum chocolate coverage. It didn't look like it from the outside, but when you break it apart, you see all the chocolate, almost like a filling instead of chip pieces. The inside dough was also just on the side of being soft without being too doughy. Everyone likes the inside of their cookie differently and some go for the ooey gooey cookie dough like center, which you won't find here. To me it was just about right.

Of course, keep in mind, this was a cookie that has probably been baked a few hours previously and fresh out of the oven, the outside might be soft and not crusty and the inside might be more like soft uncooked dough. Then again, maybe not. As is, it's an aw' right cookie. I like the big size, especially at that price. I like the coverage of chocolate through the cookie and the semi-soft middle. I'm not necessarily a fan of the sweetness or the crispy crust created on the outside.

For now I will just consider it an "in a pinch cookie." I won't necessarily go searching it out, but if I suddenly get the need for a cookie fix while at the Ferry Building, it is an option. Maybe I'll ask them to heat it up for me next time and see how that works out.
