single serving breakfast sandwich: bacon bacon in soma....i know, i know

***Well, well just walked by Bacon Bacon's cafe on 3rd street and seems it is closed closed. Somewhat of a surprise, there were always folks in there in the mornings and figured they would at least be around till baseball season. No sign posted just papered over windows and a for rent sign. Guess you'll have to look for the truck truck****

I already know what you are thinking. I've already had misadventures at the food truck and the original location in the Haight, so why am I torturing myself again with their new SOMA location Bacon Bacon Cafe. What can I say? I'm a glutton for bacon punishment, call me a baco-masochist if you will. I see the words or smell the sizzling pork in the air and am drawn to it like a pig to mud. This time around though, I decided to take a different track as this location is serving up breakfast sandwiches. I figured I'm on that journey and it is in my hood so I can reasonably get to it before work and try it. Plus, since bacon is their thing, how could they mess such a basic combo as bacon, eggs and cheese on a bun?

the almost veggie sandwich

Funnily enough, when I dropped in I saw they had several breakfast options and they serve them all day, not just in the morning. I took that as a good sign. Looking at their choices, I went off the rails and ordered up the almost veggie breakfast sandwich. A fried egg, bacon, broccoli rabe, roasted red peppers, provolone cheese and sriracha aioli on a toasted ciabatta roll for $8.50. Yeah, I was breaking the budget and close to my sandwich threshold for cost, but when I got it, it was fairly big so I'll go sideways on the cost. Sandwiches are made to order, which is great as you will get a nice hot one. Though it can make things take a little time depending on how busy they are.

One bite into mine and, sit down for it kids, I was shocked, unlike other things I've had, you could actually taste the bacon this time. While it isn't the star (like it should be) you still get the smoky flavor from the generous slabs on it. The egg is on the slightly runny side adding some richness and compliment to the bitterness from the rabe and the tang of the provolone. The aioli gives just enough of a kick to also make it interesting without a total sriracha tongue burn. I can't believe I'm saying this, but altogether it forms a tasty sandwich from them I like. I know, fortunately I was sitting down while eating it and was able to contain my composure.

But was this a one off or have they really worked out how to make a real breakfast sandwich. I gave it another week or so then went back again to try another offering.

the breakfast sandwich

This time is was their "famous" and "voted best" breakfast sandwich. Fried egg, bacon, cheddar cheese and bacon jam on a toasted poppy seed brioche bun for $7. Still a little on the price edge for me, but it is a decent size for an early morning bite. Joy of joys too, as here, the bacon is the star of this sandwich. Between the slices and the bacon jam it's just a hickory smoky delight. Add in some egg and cheese and it is a sandwich I wanted to sit and savor before rushing out into the day. You would think all those things would make it too salty or something, but it is not. There is a tad of sweetness in the jam that breaks it up, evening out all the flavors you get here. It is one of the top breakfast sandwiches I've had on my eggy jaunt.

Wow, two for two at Bacon Bacon, who'd have thought. Most certainly not me considering my past history with them. But here I was enjoying both sandwiches that managed to give me the bacon-ness I was looking for. Plus, when compared to the rest of their menu, the sandwiches are not only a bargain, but you can get them all day here. This isn't the first place I've been where the morning offerings seem to be near the same size as the regular sandwiches but will run you $1 or $2 less. I'd go so far as to say, skip the others and get one of these instead. And if you are on a protein only diet, they do a bowl version for $7 also which I need to get by again and try--once I recover that is from my shock of saying, try the breakfast sandwiches at their SOMA cafe, they are worth it. Hmmmm.....I guess that was easier to type than I thought it would be, sort of.
