Places I've Eaten

single serving breakfast sandwich: split bread in soma and a cookie

On my odyssey of breakfast sandwiches I can try before work, I'm finding they are becoming ubiquitous. It's kind of like brunch in this town, places may not start off serving it, but eventually they give in to the local culture and add it to the menu. Trick becomes how to make it stand out from all the others or to do the basic as good as you possibly can.

This time out I made it all the way down 2nd Street to Mission to try the sammie at Split Bread. I hadn't been to Split in ages, not since they opened their original location in the Metreon. At the time I was not particularly enamored of them and just hadn't been back. Now they've opened a second location (see, other peeps do like it) and while I wasn't in the mood to try another $10 sandwich, this location had breakfast stuff without the price tag and since I'm on that kick, I felt I needed to go. Because that's the kind of person I am.

sausage, fried egg and cheese sandwich

I went all in with the fried egg sandwich $6.95+tax. Fried egg, aged cheddar, arugula, aioli, house made sausage (I got that instead of bacon this time) on a toasted bun. The  place was pretty much empty at 9am and maybe they were working on catering orders for later in day(?) but it did take a little longer than expected to get. Still, it was made to order and hot and steaming when I got it, so that is a plus.

They definitely didn't skimp on the arugula and I can pretend I'm getting my healthy greens in too. It's not the biggest of sandwiches around, more along the lines of the one you can get from Super Duper Burger for breakfast, though that one is a couple bucks less. The sausage kind of reminded me of that sage maple thing 4505 Meats makes for theirs. The flavors weren't quite as pronounced so it was closer to just a pork patty for me. The aioli was more of a mayo and adds a little but not a lot. While I like cheese on these things, you get the melty gooey-ness but that taste gets lost whether it's aged or not. Sometimes bleu cheese is the only thing that will come through but who wants that first thing in the morning. It's really more of a conundrum than a criticism since I'll never pass up cheese. My egg was fried hard, which is what I asked for. A runny egg is nice for richness now and then, but this morning, I just wasn't in the mood for it.

All the pieces here are good and together they make a nice breakfast sandwich, just not a terribly exciting one you need to seek out and try. Sounds bad, but it's not really. I can see giving it a try if you are in the hood, but lots of places have similar versions of it so, you know.

chocolate chip cookie

Okay, since the sandwich was a little on the small-ish side, I was still hungry and couldn't pass up trying their cookie. At least that is the rationalization I'm going with so no judgments. They had them at the register under a glass dome, but I could still hear them calling my name through it. "Buy me, eat me, mmm, I'm a cookie, yum!" Or something like that. It is a chocolate chip cookie with sea salt, ginger and molasses for $2.50. Not the biggest size for the price, but good enough to satisfy my early morning sweets fix. It was a good cookie. Slightly crisp around the edges, soft toward the middle, plenty of chips to go around and slight saltiness I always enjoy with chocolate. The ginger I didn't get much of but I could taste notes of molasses which just enhances the chocolate and brown sugar. Definitely a cookie I'd have again.

Overall, not a bad start to a morning. A little savory, a little sweet and all for about $10, though I know most of you wouldn't be getting the cookie like me, but that is your own loss.
